Despite the spotlights, the stars still shone beacon-bright across the night sky, in this isolated space with no traffic or streetlights. Just people, and music, and nature. He had read somewhere that looking at stars was like looking into the past because of how long it took for their light to reach the earth, and he wondered what they could see in his future. He imagined them blinking out, one by one, the news of their deaths keeping the secret of his fate safe inside their winking eyes.

“People follow rules and go to college because they don’t want to spend the rest of their lives working at Starbucks, but then they get out and all that’s left is Starbucks. So you’re working your ass off like everyone else and you’re miserable just like everyone else, except now you have that extra weight of all the dreams and the ambitions those four years of education have drilled into your brain. And even then, deep down, you knew you would be nothing, like the rest of us. You have a debt to pay, like the rest of us.”

Jinja Safari - Hiccups

He had held the power of the world in his hands. What little warmth was left in his stomach told him that this was true. All he could do now was wait until it was gone, and as he waited, he began to walk, although the air was balmy and the sky dim; he knew that dawn would be breaking soon. There was a breeze, and with each step it grew colder, and the night brighter, and the patterns in the bark of the trees that much more magical.
When the last of the warmth had gone completely, there was snow on the ground.

It’s true that people learn a lot from fear. But we mustn’t forget that the things we learn from happiness are just as important.
